Turner & Constable - Rivals & Originals

Published on December 18, 2025

Two of Britain’s greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were also the greatest of rivals. Born within a year of each other – Turner in 1775, Constable in 1776 – the art critics of the day compared their paintings to a clash of ‘fire and water’.

Marking 250 years since their births, this landmark exhibition explores Turner and Constable's intertwined lives and legacies. Discover unexpected sides to both artists alongside intimate insights seen through sketchbooks and personal items.

Experience many of the artists’ greatest works, with over 170 paintings and works on paper. Highlights include Turner’s momentous 1835 The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, not seen in Britain for over a century and The White Horse 1819, one of Constable’s greatest artistic achievements.

This is a one in a lifetime opportunity to explore the careers of the two greatest British landscape painters, seen – as they often were in their own time – side by side.

The exhibition runs from November 27, 2025 – April 12, 2026 at the Tate Britain, Millbank, London SW1P 4RG

American Landscapes in Watercolor from the Corcoran Collection

Published on December 17, 2025

In the early years of the United States, artists and explorers used watercolor for mapping and documenting the landscape. By the 19th century, American painters began capturing their country in larger, more finished works that were considered fine art.

See how artists with different backgrounds and styles painted iconic American places in watercolor over two centuries. Viewers will see scenes from the Washington Monument to the choppy ocean waters of New England, from the Grand Canyon to Yosemite National Park, from the Hudson River Valley to local gardens.

American Landscapes features 30 works, most drawn from the National Gallery’s Corcoran Collection.

The exhibition runs from August 2, 2025 - February 1, 2026 at the National Gallery of Art, 6th St and Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC 20565.

Howard L. Rehs - Renowned New York Art Dealer, Passes Away at 66

Published on December 8, 2025

Howard L. Rehs, President of Rehs Galleries, Inc., and one of the most respected authorities on 19th- and early 20th-century French academic art, passed away on November 19, 2025, at the age of 66 following a year long battle with ALS.

More than a scholar and art dealer, Howard was a mentor to countless artists, colleagues, and young professionals who credit him with shaping their understanding of art, business, and ethics. His sharp wit, unwavering honesty, and contagious enthusiasm left an impression on everyone he encountered, from first-time art buyers to the most seasoned curators.

The family asks that donations be made to The Howard L. Rehs Fund for ALS Research, established in his honor so that no family or individual has to face the devastating weight of ALS alone.

Howard’s legacy will endure in the works of art he championed, the careers he nurtured, the artists he educated, the gallery he shaped, and the family he loved beyond measure.

"On behalf of myself and ARC, I want to express my deepest sorrow at the passing of Howard Rehs.  I’ve known him for nearly 40 years to be one of the most honest, decent and straight forward people I have ever met.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to his beautiful family; his wife Amy, son Lance, daughter Alyssa, and extended family for this terrible loss. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him."

Cropsey, Wyeth, and the American Landscape Tradition

Published on December 5, 2025

A stunning example of Gilded Age patronage, Jasper Francis Cropsey’s Autumn in the Ramapo Valley, Erie Railway of 1873, has been in private British collections since it was commissioned the same year by Irish-American railroad magnate James McHenry. Seen by the public for the first time since 1873, the painting will be at the heart of a special exhibition, Cropsey, Wyeth, and the American Landscape Tradition.

Alongside this exceptional large-format Cropsey, additional works by Cropsey, Alfred Thompson Bricher, Albert Bierstadt, William Trost Richards, John Frederick Kensett, Mary Blood Mellen, Martin Johnson Heade, and more survey the nineteenth-century boom in landscape painting in the United States and the relationship to industry that was a key context at the heart of this movement. The exhibition continues through key works in the Brandywine and Wyeth Foundation collections, a clear line of descent traces the further development of American landscape art, via Homer, Bellows, and N.C. Wyeth to an especially rich flowering in the works of Andrew Wyeth.

The exhibition runs from October 4, 2025 - May 31, 2026 at the Brandywine Museum, 1 Hoffman's Mill Road, Chadds Ford, PA 19317.
