June 2025
2-Week Figure Workshop
Published on June 19, 2025
Aug. 4th – 15th Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm
Charcoal into Grisaille (week 1), Form Painting Within the Figure (week 2)
Instructors: Stephen Early and Darren Kingsley (teaching alternate days)
Students can attend 1 or both weeks.
In the first week, students will start with fast, gestural figure sketches using a block-in approach to establish structure and anatomy, gradually refining their drawings before introducing paint. The process will emphasize loose, expressive marks and strong foundational elements, transitioning to grisaille block-ins that incorporate both gesture and structure. In the second week, students will focus on translating three-dimensional form onto canvas, prioritizing value control, proportion, anatomy, and paint handling—using either a limited color palette or traditional black and white grisaille to model form effectively.

Artemisia's Strong Women: Rescuing a Masterpiece
Published on June 5, 2025
In 2020, a massive explosion in the port of Beirut devastated the city. Among the wreckage was a previously unknown painting by Artemisia Gentileschi, the most celebrated woman painter of 17th-century Italy. Depicting a scene from the Greek myth of Hercules, the severely damaged painting came to Getty for in-depth conservation treatment. In an installation focused on its repair, the restored painting is accompanied by four of Gentileschi’s other paintings, highlighting her special focus on donne forti (strong women) from the classical and biblical traditions.
The exhibition runs from June 10 – September 14, 2025 at the Getty Center, Los Angeles, CA 90049.
