New ARC Living Artist Pippa Chapman

Published on May 16, 2024

ARC is pleased to welcome Pippa Chapman as an ARC Living Artist!

Pippa Chapman was born and raised in Australia and has lived overseas in the UK, France and Oman for many years. She has always been inspired by the great European Masters from the Early Renaissance to the 19th Century European Academies and she has spent many years studying, researching and experimenting with these techniques, painting directly from life using the sight-size methodology in her studio in Australia and the UK.

“My paintings take many months of patience and dedicated hard work to produce, with the aim of producing work of quality that brings ongoing pleasure to patrons for years to come. I try to imbue a sense of peace and tranquility in my work with a minimalist approach, without losing the strength of color or the drama of light.”

Mary Cassatt at Work

Published on May 15, 2024

A celebrated member of the French Impressionists, Pennsylvania-born Mary Cassatt challenged the conventional expectations of Philadelphia’s elite. In Paris, Cassatt committed herself to a career as a professional artist and made the social, intellectual, and working lives of modern women a core subject of her prints, paintings, and pastels. These depictions lie at the heart of “Mary Cassatt at Work”, which will present over 130 artworks that follow the artist’s evolving practice. The exhibition will present new findings about the materials she used and her processes, which were advanced for her era.

The exhibition is the first major showing of the artist’s oeuvre since 1998–99. By considering her professionalism, her biography, and the wider Parisian world she inhabited, a richer and more complex picture of Cassatt develops, inviting contemporary conversations about gender, work, and artistic agency.

“Mary Cassatt at Work” runs from May 18 – September 8, 2024 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy, Philadelphia, PA 19130.

Michelangelo - The Last Decades

Published on May 14, 2024

This exhibition looks at the last 30 years of Michelangelo's remarkable life, when his return to Rome, having been summoned by Pope Clement VII to paint a fresco of the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, brought him new commissions and reunited him with some of his closest friends.

Preparatory drawings for the Last Judgment as well as the recently conserved Epifania, one of only two surviving cartoons by Michelangelo, show his renewed energy and desire to challenge himself. These works are displayed alongside studies for Michelangelo's grand architectural projects as well as drawings, poems and intimate letters that reveal his personal passions and anxieties. Rather than showing an artist in decline, this exhibition shows the astonishing dynamism that Michelangelo brought to his work in the final decades of his life as he explored salvation and confronted his mortality.

The exhibition runs from May 2 – July 28, 2024 at the British Museum, Great Russell St, London, England, UK.

New ARC Approved Atelier

Published on May 7, 2024

ARC is pleased to welcome Atelier Melbourne Art Academy as an ARC Approved atelier!

AMAA was founded in 2019 with the goal of creating a unique platform in Australia to provide rigorous, in-depth training and knowledge that is inspired by centuries of studio practice. The vision of the academy emerged due to the lack of technical training within Australia. For many art students, it is unimaginable to afford the time and the expense of training overseas. AMAA was established to support the needs of students seeking a traditional art education inspired by Renaissance and 19th Century European Academies, combined with a modern approach.

A New Look at Jan Van Eyck

Published on May 3, 2024

To celebrate the historic conservation work carried out on Jan van Eyck’s masterpiece, the Louvre has decided to dedicate the first spotlight exhibition to be held in the Salle de la Chapelle since 2014 to Chancellor Rolin in Prayer before the Virgin and Child, also known as the Madonna of Chancellor Rolin. The layers of oxidized varnish that had darkened the paint were stripped away, restoring the work to its former glory.

Many aspects of this painting, less well known than it should be for such a major work of Western art, may seem difficult to understand. The examination of the Madonna of Chancellor Rolin will be driven by comparison with other paintings by Van Eyck, as well as with works by van der Weyden, Robert Campin and the great illuminators of the time. Some sixty painted panels, manuscripts, drawings, bas-reliefs and precious metal artefacts will be brought together for this exhibition, made possible by the support of many museums and institutions in France and abroad.

The exhibition runs from 3/20 – 6/17/24 at the Louvre, Rue de Rivoli, Paris, 75001, France.
