“Epiphany”, a sudden moment of revelation, is what I felt when I first saw the Lotus Pond. This little lake is not far from where I live in Burgundy, France. I previously painted Lotus ponds, a favourite subject, but those were in Switzerland, Suriname, and in the botanical gardens in Paris. It was a truly miraculous discovery, this little lake on a private property, quite, hidden away. I was given the opportunity to come in whenever I needed to make many preliminary studies on the spot. Two seasons I followed the transformations of the Lotus pond before I started the big painting. I choose the period of full glory of bloom.
