"This was a commissioned work, painted as part of a series depicting various events of 20th century American history. In the 1930's the very high unemployment rates forced many people to seek out a local soup kitchen where free or very cheap food could be obtained. This painting is a depiction a typical soup line from this time.” Although this work depicts an historic scene, it calls to mind hard realities of today’s society as we as a nation and a global community still struggle with hunger and poverty.
