Making a living as an artist

Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions about making a living solely from painting. You've given me a lot to think about and to re-evaluate. Apparently, at least some of you have other ways of making $$$ than just from painting. Not having all one's eggs in one basket is usually a wise choice in financial matters - perhaps I should think about what other saleable skills I have to fall back on when the paintings aren't selling.

A gallery owner in Scottsdale told me once that most of the artists he knows who are making it do nothing but paint - 10-12 hours a day, seven days a week. No hobbies, no other outside interests. I see his point, but I can also see how that could lead to burnout in a big way. (For that matter, most of the paintings this guy carries would pale compared to what you folks do.)

Thanks again, and I hope no one felt I was getting on anyone's case because my question wasn't answered the first time. I had a dreaded feeling that most of you do other things to make a living besides paint - which of course is not what I really wanted to hear!
