Graydon, thank you for your well thought [out] reaction.

Let me first say that I do not like “modern art”. Most of it is boring, but not all. Some of it merits interest, both for the passion wherewith it is made as well for its aesthetic results. For example I find it interesting to watch how Mondrian evolved from a fairly good landscape painter to what we know he did in his later periods (boogies, etc). But his philosophy was bogus.

The religious relation with art I do not see in "the deep meaning," "profound mystery" you ascribe to modern art interest. I think that is also bogus.

If you see great art, you know there is some truth (on ourselves) shown. That is a truth shared with religion.

I agree with your remarks on medicine.

On Freud; yes his style is crude, his artistic results also. That is not an exception in good art. (See Grünewald, Ribera, or the knife hit in Samson’s eye done by Rembrandt.)
