I spent many days at the edge of a pond in a forest in Burgundy to study and paint the majestic lotuses. After a rain shower, the water remained like pearls on the leaves.
For this painting, I felt especially attracted to the contrast between the graceful large leaves on stems and the other leaves lyings flat on the water. The foliage is presented in transparent warm green as the viewer looks at them from underneath, but they becomce a cool blue/green when they are lying on the water reflecting the sky; all this with the glittering pearls sparkling with light.
Furthermore, I have done myself the pleasure of adding three frogs as inhabitants of this world.
