He studied at the Lille Academy and then went to Paris, and in 1861 to Italy and Spain for further study, especially devoting himself to the pictures of \u003Ca href=\u0022/asp/database/art.asp?aid=132\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EVelazquez\u003C/a\u003E. His subject picture \u003Cu\u003EMurdered\u003C/u\u003E, or \u003Cu\u003EThe Assassination\u003C/u\u003E (1866), was one of his first successes, and is now in thLille museum, but he became best known afterwards as a portrait painter, and as the head of one of the principal ateliers in Paris, where some of the most brilliant artists of a later generation were his pupils [such as the great American portrait painter, \u003Ca href=\u0022/asp/database/art.asp?aid=187\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EJohn Singer Sargent\u003C/a\u003E]. His \u003Cu\u003ELady with the Glove\u003C/u\u003E (1869), a portrait of his own wife, was bought for the Luxembourg. In 1889 he was made a commander of the Legion of Honor.
