I am currently finishing my third term in the third year at The Florence Academy of Art. Because the spring term in 2020 was canceled due to Covid, I will be continuing my studies at the academy for another trimester. Despite the tuition being refunded for the missed trimester, there are still many extra expenses needed in order to graduate. Paying for housing and flights have both gotten much more expensive. I have made the finances work in the past, but this last trimester will be especially challenging.

After graduating, I hope to receive the 4th year prize so I can teach and develop a series of paintings to hold my first solo show at the conclusion of that year. As I am moving further into the program, I now feel that I have the confidence to attempt the paintings that I have been exploring but in the past felt unable to execute. Carl Jung has been a huge influence on my thoughts on the role of an artist. His writings have led me down rabbit holes to Renaissance thoughts/ alchemy, the psychology of our Self, and the role that myths have in the individual and collective.  These topics are always on my mind and I feel an especially strong gravity to explore these thoughts with paint.

Looking farther into the future, I hope to develop these thoughts into large-scale multi figural narratives. I want to be an advocate for the reassurance of monumental paintings in public venues diverging away from the traditional gallery-sized painting. In today’s society, everything is moving and changing at a tremendously fast pace, for better and for worse. I feel that people (myself included) can get lost in the “sameness” of the fast repetition going from one objective to the other. It would be such a powerful contraposition to have a stable and grounded grand painting at the heart of a bustling city that everyone can meditate, observe, critique, and talk about.

The feelings I have while looking at a master painting from the past are awe, inspiration, and the presence of something higher than myself or the painter. I think the importance of participating in that dialogue has often been connected with beautiful cathedrals and powerful religious stories, both of which are becoming a more and more infrequent endeavor, especially in the US which does not have the history of Europe. My goal is to bring the sacred space back into everyday thought and experience, hopefully to make a change for the better starting with the deepest regions of the individual psyche.
