Charcoal, White Chalk, Graphite on Toned Fabriano
24 x 18 ins (60.96 x 45.72 x 2.54 cms)

I completed this portrait in 4 sessions with instructor Rachel Li.

I tried shellacking after I toned the paper for this drawing. I liked the effect. The shellac fills in the little crevices and grains of the paper weave and smooths the drawing surface. It ultimately saves more time modeling as you don’t have to pick as many dots with the pencil tip. I learned this technique from a demo given at the GCA by FAA instructor Amaya Gurpide earlier this year. I spray fixed the charcoal halfway through the drawing to keep darkening the background and to push the lower range.
