In the movie Artemisia (made about 1992) they show a string grid frame in use circa 1550. This type is placed between the subject and the artist to basically the same effect (as Fred noted), but instead of dividing the paper or linen into smaller squares it divides the subject. This device can be used in conjunction with the other or alone. Both require drawing skills.

Tim,

My take on this kind of grid is that it was used as a training device for teaching students to see, rather than something full-fledged artists used as an aid in their own work. Movies about artists almost always get things wrong. It's well not to take them seriously.
