I saw Carnation..... in two shows under different lighting conditions. The first time it was against a white wall, and it looked terrible, dry and pasty. The second, but on a darker wall and lit properly, perhaps with color correction, it dazzled. There are so many different factors: contrast, strength of lighting, color, Kelvin. You know all this of course. But think of all of those painters who do landscapes on sunny days and when they bring their works inside, what a shock! What was once glorious and accurate color becomes washed out and drab. (Hence the painting umbrella... bringing the inside outdoors in a sense.)
