I think some definitions of "poetic" will apply pretty well to paintings. "Feelings" are often in the eye of the beholder. 54 folks looking at one work of art therefore may have 54 differing feelings.
None of these may be what the artist felt.
Most major works of art take much longer than any one feeling can survive. If and when work takes say two months, the feelings of the artist have been all over the board during the production of that one piece. Da Vinci took 4 years for the Last Supper. I'll bet his last feelings were relief at being done. His first feelings were probably delight at getting such a commission.
