Norman Rockwell and illustration

Rockwell is an artist that many either love or hate.

While I'm much more on the side of his supporters, I also see that some of his work is organized with reproduction in mind, and only sometimes does that need interfere with the finished original work being as superlative as it might otherwise have been.

That said, it's also clear that most of his detractors are modernist ideologues who won't like anything that hasn't broken some former value or rule, or thrown away some technique or method which allows them to fit things into their distorted concept of "freedom" ... which in 20th century art is best understood as "Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose". When one is free from knowledge, methods and techniques, quite the opposite occurs.

You become enslaved to your own ignorance, for it is precisely those methods, techniques and knowledge which "frees" the artist to realize the images and visions that the mind may create.
