The beauty, skill and technical finesse of Rockwell's work is the devil to the Modern Art Fundamentalist. They hate its sentiment and the fact that most people instantly like it.
Their argument always sums up to the standard pattern, it's "illustration," end of discussion.
However when Picasso paints a mother and child or some hooker in a bar; badly, well that's OK. It's not illustration because they approve of Picasso, never mind the subject matter.
I always remind Modern Art fundamentalists that most of the wall covering they favor is vastly inferior to an average designer bed sheet, floor covering or an expensive necktie ..
