Attention Mingled with Fear
by François Rude
Gods and Heroes will be a rich overview of masterpieces from the École des Beaux-Arts, the original school of fine arts in Paris, France, and a repository for work by Europe's most renowned artists since the seventeenth century. The exhibition will include approximately 140 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper dating from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries. The focus will be on epic themes such as courage, sacrifice, and death, as well as the ways that changing political and philosophical systems affected the choice and execution of these subjects. The exhibition will feature artists such as Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, François Boucher, Nicolas Poussin, Albrecht Dürer, and Rembrandt van Rijn.
