Coming from a family of artists, Darby was exposed to the arts from childhood. He learned the basics from his father. Gifted with great patience and perseverance, Darby aggressively participated Philippine national art competitions. Talent and persistence won him national recognition. He is known for his detailed watercolors but is also adept in the use of oils and is continually seeking to explore their possibilities and limits.
