Trained in classical realism, Sarah Marie Lacy plays with 18th and 19th century artistic theories but in a modern context, creating paintings and drawings that reference the past but are obviously of contemporary subjects. Her portraits and nudes are honest and powerful, telling the story of each body with grace and compassion, forcing the viewer to question whether their own idea of what is “beautiful” is too narrow. She has won multiple awards and grants, including first prize in The Artist Magazine’s 2017 Annual Competition. She runs The Drawing Room Studio in Ottawa where she teaches classical figurative art.
