Mary Graham

 

MARY GRAHAM was born and raised in New York City, and began formal art education at the High School of Music and Art, the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, and the Polakov Studio of Stage Design, followed by a career as a stage designer and scenic artist in New York and Chicago. She studied oil painting, artistic anatomy and figure drawing at the School of Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design, the New School and the Art Student’s League, studying with David Leffel and Robert Beverly Hale, among others. She received her BFA in Painting from the NH Institute of Art. Since graduating, her work has focused on landscapes of the natural world both invented and observed.

Mary’s paintings are primarily concerned with light and space. Influenced by the American Luminists of the 19^thcentury and the aesthetics of the shansui tradition of Chinese landscape painting, her paintings use color and atmosphere to evoke the solitude, silence, and transcendence found in remote places in nature.

Mary is a juried Artist member of the Salmagundi Club in New York and the Copley Society in Boston, where she has won several awards including the Alden Bryan Award for Traditional Landscape in 2012 and the Juror’s Choice award for the 2013 Armory Show Centennial. In 2008, she was awarded a month-long artist’s residency in Dinan, France. Currently living in New England, Mary finds inspiration in traveling, sketching and painting in Europe, China, and the US, as well as close to home in the mountains of New Hampshire. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group galleryshows throughout the northeast, and is included in numerous private and corporate collections.
