Lauren A. Mills received a BA in Drawing and Painting from UC Santa Barbara and an MA in Illustration from San Jose State University in Calfornia. She later studied classical drawing, painting and sculpture at the Lyme Academy in Connecticut and at the Grand Central Academy in New York City.  Mills has always been drawn to the combination of naturalistic realism, symbolism, and fantasy in the work of the English naturalist watercolor painters and book illustrators and the PreRaphaelites.  Mills has won national awards as a sculptor, painter and an author/illustrator of children’s books. Her portrait oil painting, "Waiting for Tamlin" was included in  ACOPAL's Exhibition of Contemporary American and Chinese Realism.  Awards for her sculpture include a Gold Medal at the Allied Artists of America and a First Place at both the Member’s Show case of the Portrait Society of America and the Salmagundi Club. Her sculpture was also featured in Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine in the January/February 2017 issue. Her sculpture, drawings and paintings have been honored in Art Renewal Center’s International Salon Exhibitions. Mills’ illustration work was featured in the New York Times, Spectrum’s Best in Fantastic Art and exhibited at the Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.  Fairy Wings, written by Mills and co-illustrated with her husband, Dennis Nolan, was awarded the Golden Kite for Best Picture Book by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.   Mills currently teaches in the MFA Illustration Program at the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford, Connecticut.
