This piece was painted over a 2 day period in Lagos Portugal. The Cliffs in the Andives are both beautiful, breathtakng and dangerous. The light in the area is sublime and magical. This painting was an exploration of how the bright light illuminated the various elements of the landscape. Using thick impasto, scumbling, direct painting and several other techniques in the field, my intention was to capture the beauty of each of the aspects of nature; water, rock, and the distant town, as well at the light and atmosphere from the ledge of the cliff I was standing on. The large masses of land that stuck out of the water were each living monoliths that stood out against the merciless weather there and time itself. They were highlighted in the afternoon when the sun hit a sharp angle over my shoulder.
